Private banking and financial services company HDFC Bank is planning to install up to 20 humanoid robots at its branches in the coming two years to help assist customers, according to a new report.

“We will be setting up 15-20 humanoids in the next 18 to 24 months,” Nitin Chugh, HDFC Banks’s head of digital banking told PTI.

The humanoid robot called IRA (Intelligent Robotic Assistant), which it has developed in partnership with Kochi-based Asimov Robotics, has been deployed at HDFC’s Kamala Mills branch in Mumbai.

The bank intends to use the robot as a first point of interaction with customers in order to guide them around the branch.

This move comes at a time when banks and companies in the hospitality industry are testing out robots to help with customer interaction.
